Birdy's aka Jasmine Van den Bogaerde,is a 15 year old from the UK and this is her first album, now it really is worth the money I know what you bitches will say, but it's a covers album! But in truth Birdy steps up and owns these songs and in some cases they are better than the originals (sorry dudes, I call it how I see it!)
The album starts with “1901”, originally by Phoenix. It starts really guitar heavy and unlike the original it is slow and soft and it really suits Birdy's haunting lyrics. The next song is 'Skinny Love' and is Birdy's most famous song, originally sung by Bon Iver who perform it as an acoustic song, Birdy has turned it into a haunting piano piece that is just beautiful, the lyrics really suit the way she sings and performs this song, just awesome!
“People Help the People, by Cherry Ghost, is the third single from the album. This song again focuses on that amazing voice of hers. 'White Winter Hymnal', originally by Fleet Foxes, has this really cool echo effect that is truly awesome.
We then move onto 'The District Sleeps Alone Tonight' original sung by The Postal Services is a cool song.
This followed by 'I’ll Never Forget You', by Francis and the Lights, unfortunately this song seems to more of a filler but her voice is amazing. The we get to the really upbeat track (which is quite nice given the haunting renditions of the previous songs) 'Young Blood' original by The Naked and Famous.
'Shelter' and yet again we have another haunting rendition (it must be her voice, it does move you though) and this makes it heaps different to the different to The XX version. I am thinking that nearly all the songs except this one are sung by males so maybe that's why they sound so haunting, female singing male lyrics, either way they are beautifully sung.
Next is 'Fire and Rain', which is a song by the amazing James Taylor, again it is another beautiful song with a great piano arrangement. Then we move onto 'Without A Word' which is Birdy's only original song on the album. The song shows that Birdy has great song-writing ability and I especially look forward to an album of her originals. The last song is 'terrible Love' by The National’s and it is a really cool song.
All in all this is a great album from a 15 year girl who has amazing talent ( At fifteen I was smoking and hanging out at the beach. It does lack a bit of variety but this is more than made up with that amazing voice. I do recommend it, it really is one of those albums that you listen to the whole album and not get bored. i give it 4 shots of whiskey out of five. So till next week
Peace out my bitches!
