Hello my bitches and i can’t believe it’s Monday again, then again when your a primate you don’t really give a fuck what day it is so long as I can eat, sleep and shag!

Now onto what is quite possibly the greatest album around today, yes it’s Miss Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings. This album is an absolute must have for anyone who loves music. It is old school retro with a modern twist and fuck me that Sharon Jones can sing man, she has more funk, soul and heart then any of the Girl Power ladies around today (yes that’s you Pink, Beyonce and all your ilk). I bought this album over two years ago, and its one of those rare pieces of music that sounds as awesome, as it did the first time I played it on my CD player.

This album is the bomb, it starts with the awesome song ‘Got A Thing On My Mind’ which is just musically and lyrically a gem. Then we get to ‘Give Me A Chance (Part 1)’  which is another awesome song. The authenticity of the Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings to the early funk/soul is incredible, what you hear on this album is instruments played the way they are meant to be played, no electronics, no synthesisers, just instruments and raw talent, which the Dap Kings have in abundance.

The next song is ‘Funky So & So’ which I love again the singing and the music is really first class. ‘Make It Good To Me’ is a song that I love and one that can be played ten times in a row and still sound fucking awesome, come to think of it you could do apply that to the whole album!

‘Take It As It Comes’ another classic. I love how the whole album is recorded, it really is how they should record things, old school so it’s not layered and polished with computers and shit, here you get everything as natural and as close to how it should sound if you were at a live gig of theirs.

‘Got To Be The Way It Is’, ‘Promised Land’ & ‘La Culebra’ are again just excellent songs, the Dap Kings are musical geniuses! then we move onto the stand out song which is ‘What Have You Done For Me Lately’ which is a cover of Janet Jackson, yet Sharon Jones gives it the power and authority that leaves Janet Jackson for dead, hell no this is one song where the cover version is better than the original, and that’s pretty fucking rare! The last song ‘I’ve Been Shot Down’ is another gem.

All in all this album is a collaboration of some of the most gifted musicians headed by one hell of a singer, the whole style of the album and everything about it is first class and I for one am giving this album 5 shots of whiskey out of five!

Till next week, Peace out my bitches!

    Herbie The
    Music Monkey

What’s up my bitches? I’m Herbie, the music reviewer. I love bananas and whiskey and I just love music and I will rate any CD in my own special way. See what I do is whack the headphones on and play it loud, if I love it and it moves me I will crack out the dance moves (the moonwalk is my signature move, that and the reach around, but that’s another story) or if it’s heavy I will head bang, and if I hate it well the monkey comes out in me and I will usually smear the CD in my own excrement (hey I’m a monkey after all).
