So this week I am reviewing the one and only Ben Harper.
That’s right my bitches! Ben Harper is a legend, don’t forget it, he has a way with music that seems to be beyond most musicians. The album of his I am reviewing is “White lies for dark times”. This album starts with the opening track ‘Number with no name’ which is a real bluesy/rock song with some awesome drumming and great guitar work and has such soulful lyrics. The next song ‘Up to you now’ is a somewhat slower song with fantastic lyrics from Ben Harper and well delivered in his signature
soulful but oh so sincere voice especially towards the end of the song, when he pleads “that it’s up to you now…’. The next track and first single off the album is ‘Shimmer & shine’ this song starts at a frenetic pace again the drumming is sensational, Ben Harper’s voice is awesome, I can’t believe how much he really suits the more rock orientated songs, as he has quite a unique and powerful voice.
‘Lay there & hate me’ sounds like an anthem for my life! (It’s like those skanks that just like to hate fuck me, you know who you are you filthy little urchins but remember, my life will go on you filthy skank whores)
This song is hard to describe it’s on it’s own and that is the beauty of Ben Harper you can’t really categorise him or his music and this song is a fine example of just why he is so good, he has his own style which is what separates the musicians from the mediocre.
‘Why must you always dress in black’ the next track has this awesome guitar riff from the start, it just makes me what to go monkey-shit! Awesome, it is one of my favourite songs on the album.
‘Skin thin’ is a ballad, it’s slow and tuneful with the right amount of angst and that voice that we have come to love, so sweet, soulful & sincere. Then we get to ’Fly one time’ this is one song that I have not heard in a long time , yep that’s right it starts with a drum beat! man that shit hasn’t been done since Led Zep. This song has a flow and melody that really makes it one of the BEST tracks on the album, this song will definitely stand the test of time, this will be a classic. It has everything you could want in a song, intelligent lyrics, soaring vocals, awesome guitar riff, cracking drums! It’s the stuff of legend.
The next song ‘Keep it together, so i can fall apart’ this seems to be classic Ben Harper reminiscent of his early days, it does have some of that awesome slide guitar work that he does so well. ‘Boots like these’
is way more adventurous from Ben as it is more rock than we are used to but that’s what he does and surprisingly rock sits so well on him mainly because he is such a talent. I can’t believe how well he can sing a rock song (well I guess rock grew out of the blues).
‘The word suicide’ is another more bluesy song it has awesome lyrics for such a controversial topic, it does have one of my favourite lyrics “love is such a lonely road” man can I relate to that, but don’t worry I have no plans on topping myself because of love, because, well I love myself way to much (I know my psychiatrist said it wasn’t healthy but what would he know, he was Bubble's psychiatrist as well, FUCK YOU BUBBLES!)
The last song ‘Faithfully remain’ is Ben Harper back to his roots, it is an awesome way to end what is a legendary album, this album my bitches should be in your collection so go and get it NOW my bitches.
I am downing 4 and a half shots of whiskey for this album! Just fucking awesome!
Till next week peace out my bitches!
