Hello my Bitches! I trust you all had a good week and are now getting into 2010. Today i am reviewing one of the classic albums. That should be in your collection. That’s right Jewel’s Pieces of You album.

Jewel burst onto the scene with this album and it sparked the revival of the ‘Songwriter’ an art that seem to be dying. Jewel’s album starts with the song ‘Who Will Save Your Soul’, this song was the first hit off the album, it is well sung, well written with an awesome guitar accompaniment. Next is the title song ‘Pieces of You’ which is not my favourite but still a good song nonetheless. ‘Little Sister’ is an awesome song full of hurt, it deals with drug addiction (I know but my drug of choice is alcohol!), the lyrics are so poignant. Then it comes to quite possibly the best song ‘Foolish Games’, this song is wonderful in that it details all the bullshit that goes on in relationships (and hence the reason I don’t like having long term relationships, as my mentor Michael Jackson would say in his day ’I'm a lover not a fighter”, so I make love then leave!). The lyrics are so true, they paint a picture of hurt, anger, despair that only comes from a relationship in which someone is playing games.

‘Near You Always’, is beautifully sung, with a music score and intelligent lyrics that paint the opposite of the other song, what happens when you are so in love. “Painters” is a beautiful but tragic love story that Jewel paints with words and music something that only the truly gifted singer/songwriters can do, just pure magic! “Morning Song” is about those magic mornings when it’s just you and your lady and you “Can let the world spin outside our door”, (I prefer blowjobs in the morning), great song though. ‘Adrian’ this song is awful/beautiful at the same time, I don’t know how Jewel can make the most awful events sound so beautiful, but she does. ‘I’m Sensitive’ is a song about how the world can make you so bitter (hope your reading this Redi!) but if you keep your sensitivity the world can seem so full of hope. ‘You Were Meant For Me’ is a very clever, well written, well performed song. ‘Don’t’ is a love song in every sense of the word, it is about how you can fall so deeply that you are scared to fall in love again. ‘Daddy’ is an odd sort of song I am yet to find out if it’s autobiographical, if it is then ‘Daddy’ becomes a bit scary. “Angel Standing By’ & ‘Amen’ are too of the most amazing songs on the album, the lyrics, the way they are performed, the music, they are just genius.

So all in all Jewel’s ‘Pieces Of You’ is a must have for your collection, it shall serve as a reminder of what great lyrics and music should be. I am giving this 5 shots of whiskey out of 5. Yep that’s right top marks! Jewel is everything that musicians aren’t these days, she is one of the greatest songwriters and let’s hope she continues to make us laugh, cry and move us, like great music should!

Till next week.Peace out my bitches!

    Music Monkey

What’s up my bitches? I’m Herbie, the music reviewer. I love bananas and whiskey and I just love music and I will rate any CD in my own special way. See what I do is whack the headphones on and play it loud, if I love it and it moves me I will crack out the dance moves (the moonwalk is my signature move, that and the reach around, but that’s another story) or if it’s heavy I will head bang, and if I hate it well the monkey comes out in me and I will usually smear the CD in my own excrement (hey I’m a monkey after all).
