Back to school?
If one is to believe at no time in the history have we faced a greater threat than the one we face now? Terrorism the greatest threat to all that we hold dear. The faceless enemy. How does this happen? How do we create these monsters?
I guess to understand how they are created we must first look at ourselves. Recent studies suggest that racism is intrinsically linked to a fear of outsiders. The study suggests that as we developed in small isolated communities we came to accept that everything that we knew as normal. So that when confronted by an outsider, we came to fear them,
Who are they? What do they want? What are they doing here? It became normal to fear them.
Fast forward a thousand years, humans have scattered across the earth, living in isolation, not even knowing if there are others, then come the ships, planes then later we have mass global communication, no longer are we isolated from each other we are now part of a larger global world, which at no time in history have we been closer.
So why then do we fight? Because we still have that fear!
Well here’s the deal, you have a nation of people (yourself included), and you have come to expect that everything that you do is normal, your food, music, culture, customs, religion, and values, everything that binds you together as a nation. Now in the age of global living, where travel is an everyday occurrence you are confronted with people who don’t look like you, eat the same food as you, enjoy the same music or even speak the same language or worst still don’t hold the same values. Now your first instinct will be fear!
In time, the others settle in your country, as lets face it, with the advent of global travel, borders are really only imaginary lines. You start to fear the erosion of your own culture, so you start a campaign of going out of your way to make things difficult. You start to feel that the outsiders will take your jobs, your land and worst still your women.
Soon people start to riot against the outsiders, bashings happen, then retaliations and so the cycle of violence continues, those that feel that they are being swamped in their own country say that they are defending it. I find this hypocritical especially in western society when so much of the land that they are defending was stolen from the original inhabitants, i.e., America, Australia, and New Zealand.
So when they gather together, like the Cronulla Beach race riots in Australia, they basically started telling outsiders to get off THEIR land. Isn’t this aboriginal land, so what right to they have to tell outsiders to get of land that they themselves stole. This seems always seems to be missing from their arguments when they say that they have to defend their land and culture. The culture we are creating is a culture of them and us.
In a truly global world everyone has their place and there is enough room for all religions, cultures, better still we could learn so much from outsiders, it gives us another perspective, another way of looking at the world around us. If we spent less time fighting and more time, learning and teaching our world would be a better place for it.
Remember that at no time have we ever been closer together, how this has led to an unprecedented rise in racism. Yes that ugly word that seems to define our world at the moment needs to be addressed, adults in western society you could learn a lot from pre-schools, who seem to embrace the nature of a truly multi cultural and diverse society so easily. Maybe it’s time we went back to school?
